I went to the gym this morning and worked out on the elliptical because my calf is just not loving the running right now. It was in major pain during and after my 5k, and I think I need to rest it for a while. Until I can find a way to rehab it and fix things so that it isn’t hurt when I run, I need to do other stuff.
I actually love the elliptical machine. It feels so… swingy, and almost relaxing, even though it is hard work. I was amazed that I did a 5k today and it felt 100x easier than RUNNING that 5k on Saturday. ANyway, while I was at the gym I realized that there are classes going on there ALL the time – free! (well, NOT free, but classes that I pay for every month and never utilize!) So I decided I’d make a goal out of trying at least one new class during the month of June.
Zumba sounds intriguing. But I also think it might be high time for me to get over my extreme aversion to yoga and Pilates. Should I challenge myself and try something completely new, or do something that sounds fun, or..? Hm. What class do you think I should try?

Yay! I was the first to vote
And it was a no-brainer for me LOL
LoVe Kickboxing!
I’ve done Zumba before and loved it, but didn’t vote for it because I think some of the moves might make your calf feel worse. Hope you find something new you like!
So many people never take advantage of the classes at gym, yet they can truly make a difference to our workout routines!
I’m thinking you would get a big kick (no pun intended!) out of kickboxing. would make you feel all powerful and empowered and stuff
I’m guessing so anyway. Closest I’ve gotten to kickboxing is Tae Bo LOL.
So many classes, so little time! (Or, all at the wrong time, in my case!)
I voted for Strength Plus, because it sounded similar to BodyPump, which I love. One month of once per week helped me tone quite a lot.
I’d love to try zumba and kickboxking, and if our gym had a pool I’d be all over Aqua Fit.
Oh, and yoga is really good for strength, as well as flexibility. I hadn’t expected that.
Check out the seated elliptical from Octane Fitness called the xRide. They are starting to get into clubs, and people really enjoy them. check out video at http://www.youtube.com/user/octanefitness
What *is* Zumba? Do you by any chance go to NYSC? I ask because I saw that advertised at NYSC and I have absolutely no idea what it is….
I don’t know what NYSC is but Zumba is this: http://www.zumba.com
I’ve done the SWAC classes before and they are intense!
But kickboxing is my second choice!
Congrats on the 5k!!
I love the classes, mostly kickboxing, step, and body sculpt, but I’m actually going to pilates tonight-very rare for me! I’d love if my gym has power yoga, I really like the stretching, but hate when they breathe too long. Zumba is fun, too. I’d do any of those classes on the list, truthfully. I actually don’t do anything at the gym but the classes.
Def try kickboxing! I’ve never tried Zumba but I’ve heard awesome things about that. I think you should try a few different things. You miight stumble onto something you LOVE.
if you try kickboxing I have the perfect gym right here in oakland. amazing amazing people.
I used to take classes at our local Y but I’ve stopped. The kickboxing one was a hard, intense workout and I loved it. Pilates isn’t for me although I did it for a long time. I’ve had 3 abdominal surgeries and there just aren’t muscles there anymore and I couldn’t do some of the moves although I wish I could.
I didn’t vote because I haven’t been reading your blog long enough to know you well enough to vote, but I know that when I’ve done classes (when they fit into my schedule) I think they did help me not get bored with the Y.
